As I look back on our travels around the world, Richard and I have been blessed with the opportunity to explore beautiful cultures and their native cuisines. My friends and family are always fascinated to hear about the strange dishes we’ve tried—and some are certainly not for the faint-hearted!
So, for this week I’d like to share the most “interesting” dishes I’ve eaten around the world thus far:
- Grilled rat, live jumping shrimp, and fried scorpions in Thailand
- Pan roasted ants in Peru
- Boiled octopus and raw sea urchin in Japan
- Cobra’s blood whiskey in Laos
- Live termites in China
- Blood sausage in Germany
- Grasshoppers, snakes, and tarantulas in Cambodia
- Rotting shark in Iceland
- Civet excrement coffee (coffee beans roasted after passing through the digestion of a civet/weasel) in Vietnam
- Fermented horse milk in Mongolia
While we may not find these dishes here at home, it is simply impossible to forget the experience of trying these native delicacies across the globe. Now, who would like to come over for dinner?
